Reading George Martin is not like reading other fantasy writers, even though Martin didn't only write fantasy. To read this author is to find yourself faced with mature and engaging writing. I like George Martin's style, very refined, detailed but not baroque writing. I like the believability of his stories, even if the Seven Kingdoms don't exist and Lord Snow isn't freezing to death on the Wall. Why I chose to read George Martin Because after reading Game of Thrones – a shameful fragmentation of the novel A Game of Thrones – I couldn't stop reading A Song of Ice and Fire .
The novels have a structure that is perhaps unusual, but one that works. I chose George Martin because he knows how to keep me attached to the book. Even if his major work is represented by the Phone Number Data Chronicles saga - I have however read two volumes of short stories by him, other Mondadori fragmentations - taken individually the novels - the novels, specifically, not the Mondadori semi-novels - are almost readings in themselves stages, parts of a larger project. George Martin is the new image of fantasy, or one of the new ones. There is nothing already seen, except by the eyes of Time, because his novels seem like a cross-section of our Middle Ages. The cruelty of that period, the court intrigues, the bloody battles, everything is represented with an impressive verisimilitude that I have not found elsewhere.
The first novel read by George Martin It was, as I said, Game of Thrones , purchased in a bookshop because I was attracted by the cover - and I'm talking about the first edition, because the covers of subsequent editions are unwatchable for me. I'm one of those who buys books for the cover, I admit it, and in this case I'm happy I did. It was the beginning. I remember the stress of waiting, six months to be able to read the second half of the novel and in one case 18 months to be able to read it all. A mistake I will never make again. The next purchase will be the box set containing the first 4 novels of the saga in the original language and then I will buy the hardback version, also in English, of the last one, A Dance with Dragons .
